When your kid considers a career in agriculture...
Do you have a kid who loves all things related to agriculture and homesteading? If they have considered a career in agriculture but you’re feeling unsure because of the state of the American food system, they can be the change. There are over 22 million people employed in agriculture, and with the fastest growing trends in food being sustainable practices, this could be an amazing time to join the industry.
When I first considered a career in agriculture, I thought my only options (even with a degree) were farm and ranch management or simply being a farmer. I knew I would figure out my career path at some point and just wanted to be near animals. I quickly realized that agriculture encompasses so many industries and styles of jobs! Plus, with food and agriculture literally being society’s security and driving force, it will never be a dying industry.
Is a career in agriculture realistic in today's world?
We are absolutely living in a crazy time with the direction that our food and supply chains are heading. They are polarly split, just like our country, with some people raising all their own food and some people creating lab-grown meat. But in order for our country to run and be sustainable, we have to embrace some degree of all the things in the middle.
A quick Google search brought up all these potential jobs, including Top 25 Paying Jobs in Agriculture.

How can my homeschooled teen be exposed to a career in agriculture?
Many public school kids have the opportunity to take agriculture classes in high school, but homeschooled and kids going to school in larger cities may not have the opportunity to learn about agriculture or where their food comes from. Homeschooled kids may have more chances for hands-on experience. They can farm at home or can consider shadowing careers in agriculture. But when I first started homeschooling my kids there was nothing when it comes to agriculture curriculums.
I am so thankful that the homeschool industry has seen the need for teaching agriculture and self-sufficient skills. However, many the majority are shorter unit studies and often focused on younger children. If you have a middle or high-school-aged student who is ready for a full-year agriculture education that includes an introduction to applied sciences, economics, history, and hands-on life skills, then Introduction to Homestead Science is your answer!
