Homestead Winter Preparedness

Focusing On Winter Preparation

Your garden has provided, the pantry is stocked, the days are getting shorter and one of the most important projects you will do on your homestead is prepare for winter. There are many aspects to consider and address, that if they aren’t properly completed, you could leave yourself in quite a mess, figuratively and literally. I stress this because there is nothing worse than losing animals due to a lack of winter preparation, not having the proper equipment you need in the middle of a storm or having equipment damaged come spring due skipping maintenance. More work will be created for you simply because some basic items weren’t checked off the list.

What Climates Require Winter Preparation?

I have farmed or homesteaded in three different states which has enabled me to give a broad description of how to prepare for winter in several very diverse climates. There are two pretty intense climates that I have had little experience. Those are desert and southern United States. However, many of my suggestions are going to be relevant to these climates as well. The climates that I have had experience in are mild Pacific Coast, hot central California, the high desert of Central Oregon at 4,200 ft., and North Idaho with its snowy winters and great growing seasons. All of these climates needed similar winter preparation except for the lack of snow in California!
