Who doesn’t love an easy homemade meal?

I am always on the lookout for something easy, nutritious, and at least resembling real food. So, the other day when I had a bunch of ground elk that needed so be cooked up, I concocted this this recipe for homemade Salisbury steak. I always try to avoid anything canned or in a packet due to my husband’s health requirements. But sometimes I just need something easy and even better, my 13-year-old twins were the ones who cooked this the second time around and even took all the pictures for me!

Salisbury Steak Ingredients

1 lbs ground meat

Large Onion (chopped)

1 can of mushrooms

1 Packet of Onion Soup Mix

1-2 brown gravy mix

1 TBS olive oil

Salisbury Steak Ingredients

How the Salisbury Steak is made

I have become obsessed with my Dutch Oven InstaPot. So, I will give instructions on how to cook this using my InstaPot, but its very similar with any Dutch oven or large skillet.

First, I mix the ground meat with the onion soup mix in a large bowl. Then I form the meat into the desired number of patties I want.

Raw burger patties

Next, put the olive oil into the Dutch Oven InstaPot and turn it on “Sear/Sautee” (or high heat) until the oil is hot. Then add the onion and mushroom and cook until the onions are translucent.

Then add the patties to the Dutch Oven and cover. After about five minutes, flip the patties and cook on the other side for about 10 minutes or until they read 165F on a meat thermometer.

Burger patties

While the patties are cooking, make the brown gravy in a small saucepan on the stove. The packets sometimes have different directions, so follow what is suggested for your brand.

Brown Gravy

Once the patties are cooked through, pour the brown gravy over the top of them. With a spatula, scrape the bottom of the pan to stir in onions and mushrooms.

Salisbury Steak

Cover the pot again and switch to “Slow Cook” or low.

While the meat is slow cooking, this is when I boil potatoes to serve the Salisbury Steak with. Its great over quartered or mashed potatoes. You only need to slow cook for about 20-30 minutes to give the patties a chance to soak up some gravy.
